Creating a Market Stall provides an opportunity to teach students about self promotion as an Artist. This is an interesting and engaging way to teach about Careers.
Creating a vacation market stall will be fun. There are so many aspects to marketing that a well planned project would be expected to take the entire holiday period. Break each part of the project into easily manageable steps to maintain engagement and enthusiasm.
Creating the art.
This is a great way to help students think about the artworks that they do and how to market it.
If they are painters, teach them about framing and presentation.
If they are sculptors, talk to them about the base of the work, its stability and guarantee of quality.
Through the process, students will learn about staying with a project until it is completely finished.
When they dialogue with others about the product it will assist them to gain insight into their own artistic practice.
Making the signage.
The stall itself becomes the statement about the artworks.
Big bright clear signage will be an effective way to promote the displayed products.
If each student involved in the project makes one sign, there will be ample signage as well as a good mix of styles for the presentation.
Creating the stall presentation.
Think about creative ways to set up the stall.
Will there be collapsible tables?.
Will the students need blocks, boxes and stands for their artworks?
Do they need a cover for all of these display devices and will these be hand painted, screen printed, batiked or other?
Will they use materials such as cellophane as further presentation for the products on their presentation cases and stands?
Uniform Personal Promotion
Art students have the advantage with regards to personal presentation
They have the tools and the ability to create high quality artistic statements that can be worn as mobile advertising.
If sales dwindle and traffic is slow, the students can go for a walk carrying their attractive signage with them.
Product Presentation
Mindmap so that students come up with a consistent image for their products.
The trick is to retain individuality whilst presenting the group as having a cohesive attitude.
Brainstorm with each student rapidly writing as many ideas as they can into their Scrappy Ideas Journal.
This is the time to teach the students about Mission Statements and the idea of checking for consistency of purpose.
Use this opportunity to teach the students about budgeting.
So that they gain a feeling for personal responsibility and planning, give them an individual kitty.
So that they gain the idea of negotiation, make sure they have a role within a group project budget.
So that they gain an understanding of finance and the reality principle, make sure that any slush fund you set up at the beginning is repaid before the students make a personal profit.
The idea of a prudent reserve being maintained for the next project is a good one.
Literacy Booster
Writing copy and blurbs will be challenging for some of the students.
This is a great time to use the idea of peer tutoring and group think to make the writing challenging and fun.
Illustrating all copy is a great way to link Visual Literacy and Literacy whilst at the same time ensuring a good relationship with customers.
There is great scope for talking about the elements of design within this project.
I hope you have fun with this project. If you experience great results please post about them to the discussion boards. If you experience difficulties and would like to chat about them post here and I am sure you will find people only too willing to help.
